With more than 1,000 players representing 76 nations competing for more than $50 million in prize money at 64 events in 33 countries worldwide. The Family Circle Cup has been a part of this growth from the very beginning. It is an event that celebrates tradition and continues to showcase at the highest level the best in women's tennis.

The early 70's was a period of uncertainty for women's tennis, yet filled with the promise of equality, recognition and respect. The setting was perfect for a revolution and Family Circle Magazine knew it. By agreeing to sponsor the event, Family Circle began their 30-year investment in women's sport toting importance of a healthy lifestyle among women. Thus, the Family Circle Cup was born in 1973 and would become an essential part in the history of women's tennis.

Family Circle Cup was the first women's tennis tournament to offer an unprecedented $100,000 in prize money, as well as the first one to be televised on a national network. Prize money on the Sanex WTA Tour continues to grow every year and as a Tier 1 event the Cup offers over a million dollars in prize money. With a champion's roster that includes Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis, Gabriela Sabatini, Jennifer Capriati and Conchita Martinez, fans that attend the Cup have been rewarded with getting to know some of the finest professional athletes in the world. In April of 2001, the Family Circle Tennis Center was introduced to the world during the first Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island, in Charleston, South Carolina. Nestled along the banks of the Wando River, this state-of the-art facility highlights the natural beauty of the Lowcountry landscape. The Tennis Center combines 17 championship-level courts within the 32-acre park that surrounds the 10,200 seat Family Circle Magazine Stadium.

The Family Circle Tennis Center is quickly becoming one of the finest tennis facilities in the country. Voted by the United States Tennis Association as the "2001 Best Public Tennis Facility" in the country, the Family Circle Tennis Center offers a multitude of activities and events year-round for our patrons to enjoy.

The Family Circle Tennis Center is a hub of activity throughout the year - hosting a number of tennis tournaments and clinics.  The Tennis Center also host a number of other cultural events year round including wine tastings, cocktail parties, oyster roasts, and holiday celebrations.   The Family Circle Magazine Stadium not only serves as center stage for one of the premier events in women's tennis but also provides a perfect setting for concerts under the stars.   In the fall of 2002 John Mayer, The Moody Blues and Don Henley all performed on center court in front of an enthusiatic audience.
