From Seeds to Shillings: Growing Wealth at Charles Towne Landing
Before cotton was king and rice reigned supreme, South Carolina colonists struggled to find a cash crop that would provide them with a life of luxury. Carolina's new settlers desired the wealth of Barbados. So they experimented with crops, soils and seasons in order to find a crop that would thrive in the new colony.
Visit the Experimental Crop Garden to see plants the colonists brought with them and discover how they fared. Bring your own cloth,
or buy a shirt or bandana from the gift store and dye your own indigo souvenir in Coloring the Colony. Meet the town herbalist at the
Common House. While you are there, see what's for dinner at the open-hearth cooking demonstration. From Seeds to Shillings is sure to be a day of olfactory delight.
There's always more to do at Charles Towne Landing. Visit the museum, enjoy an audio tour along the History Trail, or walk through the Animal Forest to encounter the animals that roamed Carolina before cotton was king and rice reigned supreme.
