Help Clean Up Charleston!! Communities, schools, businesses and other groups are invited to join the Adopt-A-Highway program
to clean up Charleston County. Citizens from all over Charleston will engage in litter pickups. Volunteer your church, your office team,
your soccer team or just yourself. There's no cost to you - groups simply agree to adopt a two-mile stretch of highway, and pickup litter
just four times per year for two years. The SC Department of Transportation provides the trash bags and all the safety materials that you'll
need. Once you clean a stretch of highway for two straight times, SCDOT will erect a sign with your group's name on it that will be
posted along your stretch of highway. Keeping Charleston Clean and Beautiful is a BIG JOB...Please consider helping out by joining the Adopt-A-Highway team!
Phone Tina Hembree for registration information: 888-226-9694, or click here to contact the Adopt-A-Highway office.
Adopt-A-Highway Fact Sheet
- Now in it's 20th year, the South Carolina Adopt-A-Highway Program provides an effective channel for cultivating public commitment to keeping our highways clean. The program utilizes volunteer groups to pick up roadside litter.
-
County Coordinators and County Maintenance Units from the SC Department of Transportation oversee the Adopt-A-Highway Program on a local level. All 46 counties in the state participate in the program.
-
During 2006, more than 25,000 Adopt-A-Highway volunteers removed over 2 million pounds of litter from over 6400 miles of highway statewide.
-
The Adopt-A-Highway Program began in Beaufort County in 1987 as a pilot project. Based on Beaufort County's tremendous success, the program went statewide in 1988.
-
Volunteer groups agree to pick up litter on a two-mile section of highway for a minimum period of two years. Each group is recognized with a sign bearing their organization name, placed at each end of their two-mile adopted section.
