With more than 1,000 players representing 76 nations competing
for more than $50 million in prize money at 64 events in 33 countries worldwide. The Family Circle Cup has
been a part of this growth from the very beginning. It is an event that celebrates tradition and continues
to showcase at the highest level the best in women's tennis.
The early 70's was a period of uncertainty for women's
tennis, yet filled with the promise of equality, recognition and respect. The setting was perfect
for a revolution and Family Circle Magazine knew it. By agreeing to sponsor the event,
Family Circle began their 30-year investment in women's sport toting importance of a healthy lifestyle
among women. Thus, the Family Circle Cup was born in 1973 and would become an essential part in the
history of women's tennis.
Family Circle Cup was the first women's tennis tournament to offer an unprecedented $100,000 in prize money, as well as the first one to be televised on a national network. Prize money on the Sanex WTA Tour continues to grow every year and as a Tier 1 event the Cup offers over a million dollars in prize money. With a champion's roster that includes Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis, Gabriela Sabatini, Jennifer Capriati and Conchita Martinez, fans that attend the Cup have been rewarded with getting to know some of the finest professional athletes in the world.
In April of 2001, the Family Circle Tennis Center was introduced to the world during
the first Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island, in Charleston, South Carolina. Nestled along the
banks of the Wando River, this state-of the-art facility highlights the natural beauty of the
Lowcountry landscape. The Tennis Center combines 17 championship-level courts within the
32-acre park that surrounds the 10,200 seat Family Circle Magazine Stadium.
The Family Circle Tennis Center is quickly becoming one of the finest tennis facilities
in the country. Voted by the United States Tennis Association as the "2001 Best Public Tennis
Facility" in the country, the Family Circle Tennis Center offers a multitude of
activities and events year-round for our patrons to enjoy.

Center is a hub of activity throughout the year - hosting a number of tennis tournaments and
clinics. The Tennis Center also host a number of other cultural events year round
including wine tastings, cocktail parties, oyster roasts, and holiday celebrations.
The Family Circle Magazine Stadium not only serves as center stage for one of the premier events
in women's tennis but also provides a perfect setting for concerts under the stars.
In the fall of 2002 John Mayer, The Moody Blues and Don Henley all performed on center court in
front of an enthusiatic audience.
